Waihiga was born in June, 1984 at Dolhom, Nairobi County as a firstborn in a family of 3 children. His parents are both lawyers.His father David Mwaure contested for Presidency unsuccessfully during the 2022 general Elections.

Waihiga began his schooling at Muthaiga Kindergarten. He then went to St Nicholas then to St Mary’s School in Nairobi and finally did his KCSE at Rusinga School.

After highschool, Waihiga joined African Nazarene University where her pursued and lgraduated with a degree in Computer Science.

Waihiga Mwaura realized that he was not passionate about IT during his 3rd year in campus, during his attachment. Even after graduation, he avoided applying for IT-related jobs.

He first got a job in 2006 at a call centre that served US clients, located along Mombasa Road. A year later, he got into banking sector as management trainee but he still felt unfulfilled.

While working at the bank, he was greatly inspired by media clients he served. A strong urge to join the industry struck and he heeded to the call.

These people look like they have time on their hands and are actively pursuing their passions,” he said.

At one time, Waihiga recalls disclosing his dream of joining media industry to his supervisor, who ruled out the possibility.

By the time we were done, the news was on at 7:00 pm so we ended up watching the news in the office as were winding up. I remember telling my supervisor that one day I am going to work over there (pointing to the TV). He laughed at me and said it was impossible for me to go from banking to the media,” Waihiga said in an interview.

Immediately after quitting bank job, Waihiga and his brother set up an IT based business. It however ran into losses and they were forced to close it after six months.

After business failed, Waihiga decided to try his luck in acting. He landed an Audition with a Tv football show. The show performed so well that he also got an Audition for Youth Show.

Through the show, he built a name for himself, making him more visible and popular.

Despite not being a diehard sport fan, Waihiga introduced aggressive investigation sport journalism.In November 2016, he was invited to attend the Africa Investigative Journalism Conference at Johannesburg, South Africa.

Whileworking as a sports anchor, Mwaura clinched the highly contested inaugural Mo Amin award. This is after his investigative sports piece on doping in Kenya caught the attention of the World. The story was recognized by the World Anti-Doping Agency in Kenya and warned the Kenyan government against going slow on the fight against doping.

He was also awarded the CNN Multichoice sports award in 2012 for a creative piece on maasai morans who took up cricket in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation & the spread of HIV/Aids.

Waihiga Mwaura moved from Sport Desk in 2017. With his huge experience as a presenter and co-producer,he came up with Citizen Extra, a daily 3-hour news and current affairs show.

The show has ever since transitioned from a station ‘filler’ to a must-watch program with all the latest updates both locally and internationally.

In 2018, Waihiga was named the host of Daybreak, a brand new morning show on Citizen Tv where he regularly interviewed leaders and opinion shapers on the big stories of the day.The Journalist was promoted to special projects editor and oversaw several exposes in 2022.

In December 2021, he was promoted to be the managing editor until he left the station on May 2, 2023.
