Blow as Court throws Eric Omondi into Jail

Kenyan Comedian Eric Omondi was among the 16 people who were sentenced to one month in prison over unlawful assembly, with an alternative of Ksh 10,000 fine. The controversial self-proclaimed president of comedy was found guilty for holding protests against the law.

While breaking the news on his social media accounts, Eric expressed amazement over the coincidence of two events. He noted that his sentence on fight against high cost of living came a day after the government hiked fuel prices.

Eric Omondi went ahead and disclosed that he is ready to serve the jail term, hoping that one day he will be victorious.

“So I’ve been Sentenced to one Month in Prison with these young guys for Standing against the high Cost of Living. I will serve that one Month but I know tomorrow will be a brighter day!!!!“

While giving the ruling, Milimani chief magistrate Lukas Onyina convicted Omondi and his 15 co-accused after they changed their plea to guilty.

Eric Omondi was charged alongside Peter Mukundi, Elisha Ochieng, Felix Ikutwa, Frank Misango, Alpha Juma, Cyril Isindu, Bonface Bahati, William Leshinka, Walder Sisulu, Philip Kiura, Ken Ndula, Mbwaya Mwale, Duncan Wafula, Rodgers Livoi and Wyclif Ligano on February 21, 2023.

The 16 were convicted on grounds of staging the protest without informing the police as required by the law.

In mitigation, the 16 convicts prayed for a lenient sentence saying they were advocating against the high cost of living and that the sentence should not be too harsh.They were 14 days of appeal if dissatisfied with the sentence.

His conviction comes days after he was spotted having a good moment with ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Few months a go, comedian Eric Omondi was arrested for staging anti-government protests over what he termed as high cost of living. The Comedian was found to spend a night at Central police station before he was released.

Eric was arrested while pulling a ‘mkokoteni’ that was filled with CVs of about three million Kenyans. He told digital reporters that he was taking the CVs to statehouse but shortly after he was ‘seen flying in a police car.’

Speaking to Vincent Mboya after being set free, the comedian said that he will ensure that the CV s get to statehouse as planned.

“Naskia vizuri sana kuwa huku nje. Nimeacha mkokoteni yangu nitakujia kesho. Tunaendelea mpaka mwisho. Hizo maCV nitazipeleka,” he said
