John Marete: From losing Job at Citizen Tv to Owning A Popular Tv Channel

John Marete is the face behind popular Meru based Weru Tv and Weru FM.
Marete first worked as the head of Camera at the RMS – owned Citizen Tv. He however lost his job in 2016.

Losing the lucrative job from the giant media house did not dim his Journalism career. In the same year, he launched Weru Tv.

Weru Tv broadcasts in Kimeru language. It has grown to be the top news channel Mt.Kenya East region, with it huge fanbase in Meru and Tharaka Nithi County.

Marete later launched Weru FM in 2017 to counter RMS-owned Muga FM and Meru Fm which is owned by Media Max.

While speaking in a an interview, John Marete’s former colleagues deacribed him as a leader who had entrepreneural mind.

Marete was a leader who clearly showed signs to make major moves in the media sector. His efforts helped him build what he has achieved today.He was a key figure in grooming many cameramen who have since made major strides working in leading media stations,” the journalist said.

The Tv station has maximized on the local population’s interest by focusing heavily on Meru culture.

Marete went on to start a radio station, Weru FM, in June 2017 that broadcasted in Meru as well.

Weru FM got a boost after he brought together some of the region’s most well-known media personalities, including Makena Materi of Muuga FM, Gachururiga Ka Awerû from Thîîrî FM and Rita Kanorio of Meru FM.
