Lady luck rarely strikes twice, especially when it comes to gambling. When 36-year-old Cosmas Korir was informed that he had won the kes208 million SportPesa mega jackpot in 2018, he knew he had to invest his good fortune properly because this was not something that happened every day.

He was driving to West Pokot when he received a call from a SportPesa staffer, and later from the betting firm’s chief executive officer, Ronald Karauri, confirming that he had won the big prize.
“The caller on the line announced to me that I was the mega jackpot winner. I stopped my car to digest the information I had been given. Initially as we placed our bets, we promised each other to share the price money. I will still do the same to my friends who assisted me in selection of teams,” he said.
How he spent his fortune
His first purchase was a Toyota Landcruiser equipped with a V8 engine. Korir noted that the car had served him well up to this point.

1.Bought first flat
He paid Sh50 million for a flat in Kitengela from a friend, which he named KK. Mr Korir estimates that when the flat is completely occupied, the monthly rental income is Sh570,000.
2.Bought second flat.
He spent Sh65 million on a second flat in the same neighborhood. The apartment comprises 96 rooms, 25 one-bedroom houses, and 71 bedsitters.
When completely occupied, he earns an estimated rental revenue of Sh820,000 per month from this unit.

3.Completing his house in Bomet
He funneled kes2 million to finish his Bomet rural house, which had halted when he ran out of cash, and reimbursed a kes3.5 million loan he had taken to build the property.
4.Set aside Sh130 million in a fixed deposit account
Korir was swamped with financial advice from friends and well-wishers, requiring him to deposit Sh130 million in a fixed account in order to assess his alternatives rationally.

Mr Korir handed his two pals kes5 million each to keep a wager he made with his friends that whoever won would share a portion of the riches.

“We were three of us and as usual we sat down and strategized on the teams we should bet our money on. My friends did not have money, so I shared with them Sh200 so that they could bet on five teams each while I decided to bet on seven teams,” he said.
