On Sunday 8 October 2023, the late Kenyan Athlete Kelvin Kiptum broke the limit and gave a sterling performance at Bank Of Chicago Marathon. The 23-year old runner shaved off the previous record of 2hr 1min 9s, which was set by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge at the 2022 Berlin Marathon.
In his statement, Kiptum disclosed that he did not anticipate that the title would come so soon.
“World record was not in my mind today, but I knew one time one day I’d become a record holder,” elated Kiptum said.
Following the stunning performance, Kelvin Kiptum took home a hefty prize of $100,000 (14.8 million shillings) for taking the first place in the Marathon.
The Marathoner also received $50,000 (7.4 million shillings) for breaking the world record. The amount is uniform for all the competitive division by the Chicago Marathon.

Additionally, the Kenyan government awarded Kelvin Kiptum 5 million shillings for breaking the world record, as promised by President William Ruto.
Earlier last year, Faith Kipyegon who broke two World Records received 5 million shillings for the first one and a house worth 6 million shillings for the second one.
In his speech, the President said, “And it will be the same for the other World beakers and record m-breakers that will come after Faith.”
