Kenya union of post primary school teachers ( KUPPET) has made quick U-turned on planned teachers strike ahead of KCSE.
The union has called off the strike which was supposed to commence from the beginning of match.
The move is a relief to form four candidates who are about to seat for Kenya certificate of secondary certificate (KCSE) examinations.
KUPPET secretary general Akello Misori has revealed that the strike has been called off to allow form fours to carry on with their examinations smoothly.
Akello Misori has however asked the government to provide adequate security for teachers who will be supervising the examination process.
“What we want as a union is the security of teachers who will supervise national examination in conflict areas like Mandera, parts of Rift Valley, especially West Pokot,” Akello Misori.
The move by the union to call off the strike days after Ministry of Education cabinet secretary George Magoha pleaded with teachers to stop playing around with the lives of student. According to George Magoha, effecting a strike at such a time will disorient the mind of learners.
“Our children are not like chess pieces to be played around with. So we are pleading with Kuppet officials to withdraw the strike notice immediately and let our candidates do examinations in a conducive environment without any disruption,” Magoha.
TEACHERS’ DEMANDS
While backing the move of KUPPET to call of the planned strike ahead of KCSE, teachers Service commission (TSC) Calvin Anyuor has revealed that the commission is working with relevant government authorities to review 2021-2025 CBA.
According to the CBA, KUPPET want 30% to 70% salary increment.
If the CBA is implemented the lowest plaid teacher will go how home with Ksh 59,425 from the current sh 34,955.
The highest paid teacher will have sh 153,715 from the current sh 118.242.
The union also want commuter allowance increased to sh 8,500 and sh 20,800 from the current sh 5000 and sh 16,000 respectively.
